The End of Cataclysm

This is Bricu and the fox kit from Tol Barad.I won’t parse words here: Cataclysm RP was more difficult than Wrath. Don’t get me wrong: I enjoyed a lot of this xpac, and the rp it inspired, but coming off the high of Wrath… Well, it was hard to top.
Truth be told, cata was a Hard xpac. We lost people. Stories took forever to tell because everyone was busy. So of the RP hooks just didn’t set. But with the upcoming 5.04 patch, all this is going to change. Rp has picked up. People have returned to the game… And new stuff is coming.
So, dissect the RP of the Cataclysm. How did it affect you and your circle?

From my experience, it was a huge shift away from the Xpack storyline driven RP to player-run stories. Cata just didn’t have that overarching plot that Wrath did, and it was very difficult to get my characters involved in it. Add that most of us have been playing for almost 8 years, and people needed a break.
Don’t get me wrong, RP in Cata was pretty awesome. I was involved in several player-run stories that were epic and fun and gave me a chance to develop my characters. However, I’ll admit I did have a hard time coming down from Wrath. I’m hoping Pandacraft will pick things up again. A return to the more vanilla-WoW style of Alliance/Horde conflict and world PvP will be good for RP. And a nice break from this “You’re the uber-heroes, go kill this epic world boss!” that Cata was so fond of.

My perspective is a little skewed – partly because I was absent for maybe half of Wrath. Duerma’s been my main since forever, but Cataclysm felt like someone wrote me a letter and asked “Hey, what stuff would you really like to see for Corrienda?” Endangering her actual home? Check. Twilight’s Hammer & Old Gods? Check. Druidism vs. the arcane (ie, the Highborne being brought back into nelf society)? Check. Druids gone bad after a traumatic loss? Check. Other random bits tying in with backstory I wrote and forgot like 6 years ago? Check for that too. Mix all that with finally finding a new consistent RP partner, and Cataclysm ended up being one of the best RP expansions for me.

That’s cool Corri! I get the feeling that while Wrath tied up the Frozen Throne of Warcraft 3, Cata tied up Vanilla WoW. And, given that idea, I can totally see how this xpac could be an amazing RP experience.
